John Bloomfield — the story behind the lens

Capturing moments that matter

A passion for photography, pets, and people

I picked up my first SLR camera at 14 when I chose photography as one of my O-Levels — and yes, that means I pre-date GCSEs!

Photography didn’t beckon as a career when I left school and I instead ended up going into the insurance sector. But I continued to enjoy photography as a hobby and over the years took the occasional foray into paid gigs, mostly for friends and family with payment made via wine and food. I also took some City and Guilds photography courses, which introduced me to new styles and techniques.

When my daughter was born I gave up my full-time job and combined becoming an early house husband with starting my first photography business. I focused on children’s portraits and weddings. Then — after our son arrived — I resumed my full-time career in insurance. I still kept up my photography as a side hustle, but switched to corporate events to leave weekends free for my family.

In 2015, I left the world of insurance behind and launched DogsMogsSprogs, offering dog walking, cat sitting, and children’s photography: an unusual mix! But it paid off and soon I was taking on a team of dog walkers and cat sitters and concentrating more on the photography side.

A move from Surrey to Battle in East Sussex in 2024 saw me hand over the dog walking and pet sitting reins to Nathaniel’s Paw Pals and make photography my sole business priority. My focus is still primarily on pets — especially dogs — as well as children and families, and I also work with business professionals looking for headshots and other imagery.

Building DogsMogsSprogs and being a lifelong pet owner myself means I really do have a wealth of experience when it comes to working confidently with animals. And because I’m basically just a big kid at heart I can quickly put children at ease to get the very best shots!

By the way, I also still do the occasional paid dog walk — you can find me here on Rover.

Excellent experience

Had an excellent experience being photographed by John. He travelled to me, was warm, friendly, and took the time to understand what I wanted. Really pleased with the portraits he took – I’ve been able to use them on both my professional and social networks. Would highly recommend John Bloomfield Photography!

Children and family photography

Babies, children, families and more

Nothing beats a photograph for holding life’s magical moments, especially those in our family albums.

That’s why working with children and families is such a joy: at every session, I’m helping create lifelong memories.

From newborns to shoots involving several generations, my goal is to discover what’s special about you.

Pet photography

Dogs, mogs, frogs (ha!) and more

You know what they say about working with animals and children? I’m happy to report it’s absolute nonsense!

When it comes to dogs and cats, I’m passionate about capturing their personalities, energy, and sheer love for life.

And frogs? Well, I have been a lizard pet parent in the past so all things are possible…
