Capturing the wonder of childhood

on location, studio, both!

Location shoots involving children are just like any other day out except this time you happen to have a photographer with you!

So simply do what you’d usually do, join in, unleash your own inner child, have fun and basically ignore me. I’ll start with candid photographs, without directions. Once the children are comfortable with the camera, we’ll create more posed — but still relaxed — images. There will usually be a choice of backdrops, so we’ll move around our location and explore different angles. An outdoor children’s shoot lasts around an hour per location, but there’s no extra charge if there’s a little overrun.

A session at my studio in Battle, East Sussex, starts with ensuring you’re relaxed and getting the kids at ease in their surroundings. Next I’ll explain that I’m looking for them to be in a particular position, and hitting that target takes as long as it takes! From then on, I’ll work quickly to capture the perfect shots while ensuring everyone’s still having fun.

As with location shoots, studio sessions last around an hour. You can also combine indoors and outdoors — simply book a consultation with me and we can discuss the details.

Frequently asked questions

For outdoor shoots, I allow around an hour per location. And the same applies if we are indoors at my studio in Battle, East Sussex. You can of course book me for more than one location, or a mix of location and studio shoots. Your choice — pricing details here, or book a consultation to discuss the details.

Whether we’re indoors or outdoors, you’ll need food, drinks, a change of clothes, toys and other bribes! If your shoot involves two or more children, please make sure they’re wearing complementary natural colours with unobtrusive patterns and logos. Don’t expect everything to run like clockwork — there’ll be plenty of time and when it comes to children, distraction works better than logic!

There’s ‘awful’ and there’s ‘awful’! You’d be amazed at the stunning shots of children I’ve captured over the years on the dullest days — with or without a bit of rain. However, if your location shoot vision is for sunshine and blue skies — and possibly a specific destination some distance away — let’s discuss this in our first call and arrive at a strategy that works for you, your kids, and me. And, it goes without saying, if a full-blown storm is forecast for the day of your shoot, I’ll of course reschedule. Please see my Business Terms for more details around cancellations.

Yes — absolutely! I enjoy photographing people of all ages.

I don’t offer organised packages, but if you make the arrangements I can of course be there to capture the magic moments. Just mention what you’re planning when booking and I can confirm whether there’s likely to be any extra charge.

Yes, I love capturing that special time in pregnancy as the countdown begins. We can do the shoot on location outdoors, or you can come to my studio in Battle, East Sussex.

Perfect pregnancy shoot

We had a great experience with John, he made us feel comfortable and captured beautiful, natural photos of us and our baby bump. The quality of the images are excellent, and we’re really happy with the results. Highly recommend!

Family photography

Families (both human and furry!)

You’ve got choices when it comes to family group shoots!

We can head outdoors and have a location session, or we can get everyone together in your home. Smaller groups have the added option of coming to my photographic studio in Battle, East Sussex.

When deciding what’s going to work best for you, think about mobility issues or special needs and always cater for the least able person in your group. And you’ll need to ensure everyone wears clothes that work well together, both style and colour-wise. They don’t have to match, but they mustn’t clash!

And remember, your pets are always welcome — they’re part of the family after all.

Above all, don’t stress about trying to make everything perfect. Few families group shoots are, and yours is about capturing who you are, your true personalities, in a way that draws you all closer together.

Let everyone know they need to wear complementary outfits, in terms of colours and styles. And if you have a favourite location in mind, please check it’s accessible to the least able person in your group.

Make sure you’ve eaten beforehand and bring extra food with you. (Plus extra for #hangry teenagers…) Add a change of clothes for younger family members, and toys to keep them occupied between poses.

Absolutely — I love photographing families with their dogs, and we can always combine a family session with a dog session. That way you’ll get family group shots, shots of the family and their dogs, and images of the dogs on their own. A three-in-one result! Just get in touch to discuss the details.
